The new capability makes it possible to select a specific value from decoded communication data and treat it like a conventional measurement — displaying it as a waveform, meter or table.

This can significantly simplify the journey from raw automotive communication data to meaningful engineering information.
From Communication Data to a Measurement
Consider a pressure sensor communicating over a SENT interface.
Traditionally, an engineer may capture and decode the SENT communication and then search through a large table of decoded information to locate the pressure value of interest.
With the new Value Extractor I/O, the workflow becomes much more direct.
Multi Channel captures the electrical signal and decodes the SENT communication. The Value Extractor can then isolate the actual sensor value from that data stream.
That extracted value can be plotted against time just like a conventional oscilloscope measurement.
For example, an engineer can immediately observe how pressure changes when the accelerator is operated or when engine load changes.
Information that was previously buried inside a complex stream of digital messages becomes a clear, measurable engineering signal.

A Powerful Workflow for Automotive Diagnostics and Testing
The Value Extractor works with protocol decoders available within TiePie Multi Channel, including:
CAN | CANopen | J1939 | LIN | SENT | FlexRay | I²C | UART | SPI | DMX512
Specific messages can be selected using parameters such as ID, address and read/write information.
Values can also be converted into the required engineering unit.
This creates an interesting end-to-end measurement workflow:
Electrical Signal → Protocol → Message → Parameter → Measurement
And importantly, these stages can be handled within the same measurement environment.
Why This Matters for Automotive Engineers
Modern automotive systems increasingly combine electronics, sensors, embedded software and digital communication.
An oscilloscope trace can tell you what is happening electrically.
A protocol decoder can tell you what is being communicated.
But the engineering question is often something different:
What is the actual physical value represented by that communication, and how is it changing over time?
It could be pressure.

- Torque.
- A sensor reading.
- Or another parameter being exchanged between electronic systems.

Practical Example: SENT Sensor Data
TiePie demonstrates the new capability using an automotive pressure sensor communicating through SENT.
A specific value is selected from the decoded SENT data stream and displayed graphically in real time.
As the accelerator pedal is operated, the corresponding pressure changes become immediately visible on the graph.
Instead of manually examining long tables of measured values, the engineer can directly see the behavior of the parameter being investigated.
