When we hear the name Intel, it becomes clear that the product is worthy of price and use. Such has been the company’s reputation over the years. So now when we hear the name Intel Galileo, there shouldn’t be a mint of doubt about the products features. Intel’s entry into Arduino-certified development boards seems to set a new dimension to the Arduino family and let’s not forget that it might also set a new dimension to the open source as a whole.
Intel Galileo is the first in a line of Arduino-certified development boards based on Intel x86 architecture and is designed for the maker and education communities. If you are really interested to know the processor, here it is, it is based on the Intel Quark SoC X1000, a 32-bit Intel Pentium processor-class system on a chip (SoC), the genuine Intel processor and native I/O capabilities of the Intel Galileo board provide a full-featured offering for a wide range of applications. Intel Galileo combines Intel technology with support for Arduino ready-made hardware expansion cards (called “shields”) and the Arduino software development environment and libraries.
And to your surprise, this board comes with an open source OS also making it ever more compatible. The development board runs an open source Linux operating system with the Arduino software libraries, enabling re-use of existing software, called “Sketches“.
An Arduino board running an OS, doesn’t it sound quite unique!!!
A question might arise that whether it is compatible with Arduino IDE. Of course, the Galileo board is also software compatible with the Arduino Software Development Environment (IDE), which makes usability and introduction a snap. In addition to Arduino hardware and software compatibility, the Galileo board has several PC industry standard I/O ports and features to expand native usage and capabilities beyond the Arduino shield ecosystem.
And what not??? It includes a full sized mini-PCI Express slot, 100Mb Ethernet port, Micro-SD slot, RS-232 serial port, USB Host port, USB Client port, and 8MByte NOR flash come standard on the board.
