Before we learn what a DE-9 Male connector is, we need to know about Serial Communication as the transfer of data in a DE-9 Male connector is in Serial mode
Serial Communication
A Communication form in which information transfers in or out is just one bit at a time (in contrast to a parallel port) and is done through serial port which is a serial communication physical interface. Data can be transferred through serial ports to devices such as modems, terminals and various peripherals.
Introduction to DE-9 Male Connector
The DE-9 is a common type of electrical connector as shown in figure 1. DE-9 connectors are designed to work with the EIA/TIA 232 serial interface standard, which determined the function of all nine pins as a standard, so that multiple companies could design them into their products.
This connector is used for a variety of purposes. Two common applications are RS-232/EIA-232 (serial) connections (including UPS cables), and a variety of video interfaces on the IBM PC.
Physical Orientation of a DE-9 Male Connector
They are named for their physical characteristic in the shape of D and has 9 contact pins. The DE-9 connector is often mistakenly referred to as the “DB-9” connector. The “E” refers to the shell size. A “DB-25” connector has a “B” size shell, but the common nine-pin connector is smaller and has an “E” size shell.
It contains two or more parallel rows of pins or sockets usually surrounded by a D-shaped metal shield that provides mechanical support, ensures correct orientation, and screen against electromagnetic interference
. The part containing pin contacts is called the male connector or plug, while that containing socket contacts is called the female connector or socket. The socket’s shield fits tightly inside the plug’s shield. The DE-9 Male Connector is connected to a DE-9 Female Connector.
The difference between DE-9 Male Connector and DE-9 Female Connector
A Male Connector is commonly referred to as a plug and has a solid pin for a center conductor. A Female Connector is commonly referred to as a jack and has a center conductor with a hole in it to accept the male pin.

Where are DB9 Connectors used?
DB9 connectors were once very common on PCs and servers. DB9 connectors are designed to work with the EIA/TIA 232 serial interface standard, which determined the function of all nine pins as a standard, so that multiple companies could design them into their products. DB9 connectors were commonly used for serial peripheral devices like keyboards, mice, joysticks, etc. Also they are used on DB9 cable assemblies for data connectivity.
