A Buzzer is an Audio signalling device, which may be Mechanical, Electro-mechanical or Piezoelectric.
Origin of the name Piezo
“Piezo”, derived from the Greek word ‘Piezein’, which means to squeeze or press, and is a prefix used in Piezo Buzzer.
About Piezo buzzer
Piezo buzzer is an electronic device commonly used to produce sound of maximum 95dB (min 85dB) as a speaker. It has a 12mm round speaker as shown in figure 1a and 1b. An ordinary Piezo buzzer works between 3 – 12 volts DC. Encapsulated in a cylindrical plastic coating, it has a hole on the top face for sound to propagate.
Simple working principle of a Piezo Buzzer
A Piezo buzzer has a Piezo element (disc) which is a circular shaped metal plate (as shown in figure2) with a thin coating of Piezo material. This Piezo material works on the property that vibration is generated in the presence of an Electric field.
The Piezo buzzer also consists of an oscillator inside. The Oscillator circuit consists of different elements like an Inductor, a Transistor, Capacitors and Resistors. When the oscillator circuit gets 3-12 volt DC, the elements combination oscillates and generates a frequency around 2-4 kHz and the Piezo element vibrates accordingly to produce a piercing sound.
Piercing sound generated by the Piezo Buzzer
As explained before that the oscillation in the Piezo buzzer is between 2 – 4 kHz. This sound is piercing because our hearing threshold is maximum in this frequency. Buzzer uses this frequency to get easy attention even in a highly noisy environment.
Simple Example done in Proteus Tool
Above we can see that a Piezo Buzzer is given a 5V from a battery. And in figure 4, the 5V is given to the Piezo buzzer which beeps.
And some important features of Piezo Buzzer:-
- Each speaker is PTH solderable and requires an operating voltage of 3.5-5V with a mean current of 35mA max.
- The buzzer is extremely light (1.4g), simple to use, cheap (just Rs5) and can be mounted on a PC.
- It is used in many applications like car reversing indicator, electric bells, and computers and to create simple music or user interfaces.
