The new BeagleBone Black provides a credit-card-size,Linux computer as an open hardware- and software-development platform that lets experimenters, engineers, programmers, and non-technical people rapidly translate ideas into working devices.
The BeagleBone Black board uses a Texas Instruments 1-GHz Sitara AM335x ARM Cortex-A8 processor that provides enough computer power to create advanced graphical user interfaces put out on a microHDMI port. The microHDMI connection lets you connect a monitor or TV to the board, and a USB connector lets users attach a keyboard or mouse. You also get two gigabytes of on-board memory that lets you run preloaded Linux software. A USB cable from a host PC supplies power for the board.
By preloading in flash memory the Angstrom distribution of Linux and the free Standard Cloud9 integrated-development environment for Javascript programming, the BBB designers have kept the microSD slot open for your own use. You might use a microSD card to load a Ubuntu Linux distribution.
