As in the past we have not been secretive on our consulting offerings ! We at Tenet pick up projects that are not only challenging but also solve our basic mission of ” Simplifying Technology” and make it more usable in varying environments.
This time around we had a sports start up company Active Sports led by Mr Satish a renowned sports figure in the swimming circuit in India. Active sports came upto us asking if we could build gadgets that can really be used in sports and this sounded really interesting. One of the first engagement has been to explore how scoreboards for games could be built and also try to identify some of the use cases and pain points existing today.
As part of the research we identified some key pain points :
> All the sports scoring equipments at the local (state/national) level came predominantly at a huge cost so the outcome is either have one and use it or the other easiest one was to not even buy them.
> The equipments really lacked usability studies and was not easy to use and adapt.
> These equipments are not mobile and really not scalable.
> Now comes the most concerned one. A person standing on top of stadium and trying to change the scoreboard by hand . I personally visited the place and its really scary to stand in that conditions and execute the job.
Now that is a good challenging list to work on and we began with looking at some of the existing solutions and they were really awesome but with whooping number of features and amazing user interface with endless amount if options that i am sure may not be useful all the time.
Here are some pictures of our visit to the IVL league currently being held at the indoor stadium in Bangalore !
We have a video documentation as well as the technical details coming soon on our you tube channel so stay tuned.
Nevertheless we at Tenet felt very contented and a sense of feeling that we could some how build a solution that could help the sportsmen as well ! It was extremely comfortable for them to look at the LED display for getting their quick updates and for the scorers it was a great experience to have used an RF controlled score board and they felt it extremely easy. A mere training of 10 minutes was enough and they felt really great and also came up with a set of enhancements that they would like to see and our Technical Team gently nodded and noted them down and assured them that we could put those minor changes into the gadget.
Here is a brief overview of the whole setup . We built the whole score board using arduino, shift register, current drivers and a high strength RF (Currently we have a choice of either 300M or 1KM). The entire setup consists of lots and lots of LEDs and we are also planning to sell these segments assembled through our stores soon !
We used some intelligent programming techniques to make sure we account for RF data loss (if any) . We are also researching if we could build more portable solution and as always we are almost having the surprise ready and the next version would account for this use case as well !
